Physical Disabilities
Characteristics:
1. Some physical disabilities are readily noticeable, while others are not easily visible. Students may experience limitations related to the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or nervous systems. In some cases, disabilities result from illness or injury, leading to permanent physical impairments of various forms.
2. Students with physical disabilities may experience mobility difficulties, such as being unable to run, climb stairs, or perform tasks requiring simultaneous use of both hands.
3. Some students with physical disabilities may be more susceptible to illness due to weakened physical conditions.
4. Causes of physical disabilities vary and may include muscular atrophy, arthritis, amputation, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, or poliomyelitis.
5. Some students with physical disabilities may require personal assistance with daily activities, while others can achieve independence through the use of assistive devices.
Peer Support:
1. When using stairs, keep the side with handrails clear or allow the student with a physical disability to lightly hold your arm for balance.
2. Communicate openly to understand limitations and strengths, helping to avoid misunderstanding or uncertainty about how to offer assistance.
3. When appropriate, accompany the student during physical activities without overexerting yourself.
4. Show empathy and consider situations from their perspective.
5. Offer help proactively, for example, when buying meals or submitting assignments..
Recommendations in Teaching:
1. For students with upper-limb limitations, provide flexible assessment methods in grading, such as oral exams or other alternative evaluation formats.
2. Work with campus staff to improve accessibility and ensure barrier-free movement and learning environments.
3. Students with lower-limb disabilities may be unable to stand for extended periods. Teacher should make suitable adjustments in practical or lab-based courses.
4. For Students with balance or coordination issues, take extra precautions during laboratory sessions and physical activities to ensure safety.
5. If a student requires assistive learning devices, coordinate with the Resource Room to arrange appropriate support.
